The Ausable Club and Director of Tennis Job Overview The Ausable Club is a private country club in St. Huberts (Keene Valley), NY with a rich tradition for over 100 years. The club’s amenities include a historic clubhouse, highly respected mountain golf course, 7 Har-Tru tennis courts, and full service Pro Shop, private forest reserve (the Adirondack Mountain Reserve), state of the art swimming pool complex, a la carte dining facilities, and catering operations. The Ausable Club is seeking a dynamic and accomplished tennis professional to organize and direct all club tennis activities, events, exhibitions, tournaments, and lessons to a long-established club. Candidates must have strong teaching/instructional skills, high level management experience, and visible leadership background. The Club’s Director of Tennis must be experienced in the oversight, directing, and participating in the daily maintenance and operations of tennis courts and playing surfaces to deliver an exceptional tennis experience to the membership. The Director of Tennis must possess organizational and time management skills as this position has a variety of traditional and non-traditional responsibilities. Finally, the position requires excellent interpersonal skills to deal with the membership and staff of the Club. The ideal candidate will be of high integrity, excel at collaboration, operate with a strong team spirit, and possess the ability to manage effectively. Experience in the private club industry is a significant plus. This is a summer seasonal position that oversees the tennis program functions of the club and comes with seasonal housing and excellent quality of life. This team member will report directly to the General Manager. Tennis Program Overview The Ausable Club operates and maintains 7 Har-Tru tennis courts and a full-service Pro Shop. The successful candidate will supervise an Assistant Tennis Professional, as well as 1-2 Tennis Associates. Director of Tennis Job Duties ( BUT NOT LIMITED TO ) Provides lessons/clinics for members relating to the techniques and strategies of tennis. Strings rackets and performs other light equipment repairs. Coordinates maintenance, repair, and cleaning of courts with Tennis Personnel. Selects, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates the Assistant Tennis Professional and other tennis staff. Transfers all charges from the tennis shop to the accounting department. Ensures that all club members and guests receive courteous, prompt, and professional attention to all their tennis needs. Develops a detailed calendar of tennis activities and applicable promotion campaigns during the tennis season. Maintains a close working relationship with other club professionals. Maintains accurate records of all lessons and clinics given; provides monthly written reports. Inspects and maintains all physical areas constantly. Participates on all committees related to the tennis operation. With the GM and Director of Finance, develops departmental operational budget including payroll, benefits, taxes, and operational line items. Assists Food and Beverage Director, Executive Chef to coordinate food and beverage service support for tennis events. Attends all staff and management meetings during the season. Determines when courts should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the playing surface if play continues. Director of Tennis Skills and Qualifications Candidates should have a career path marked with stability and progression of title and responsibility while showing ongoing professional development, as well as a career path marked with verifiable accomplishment as a team builder and leader. Requirements Collegiate team experience desirable, preferably with a 5.0 or above rating. Two-to-three-year competitive playing experience and/or tennis supervisory experience. Knowledge of court maintenance. Demonstrated experience in retail sales of sporting goods. USPTA membership is preferred but not required. Candidates must be innovative and bring knowledge of industry best practices to the Club. The ability to work “hands-on” with other staff and managers, and to mentor, train, and lead. Interaction with the membership is both expected and strongly encouraged. Position Compensation The salary for the Club’s Director of Tennis is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Compensation includes: weekly salary (10-week season), lessons, clinics, merchandise sales.
