Position Summary:
The Marcus JCC of Atlanta is seeking a dynamic and experienced Dance Director to lead and grow a dance program that includes both recreational classes for children/adults, an award-winning competitive team of more than 50 dancers, and a robust summer dance camp. This position is responsible for designing and managing a comprehensive dance curriculum for children, youth (ages 2–18) and adults of all experience levels, creating an inclusive and engaging environment that fosters creativity, health, discipline, and community connection. Strong leadership, communication, and marketing skills are required.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Curriculum Development
· This role is crucial in fostering a vibrant dance community, developing innovative choreography, and guiding dancers of all skill levels to achieve their artistic potential.
· You will collaborate closely with other program leaders and administrative staff working under the Arts Department Director to shape the creative direction and effective operations of the program. In the summer, this position reports directly to the MJCCA Day Camps Director.
· Design and implement a well-rounded curriculum covering various dance styles (e.g., creative movement, ballet, hip-hop, contemporary, tap, jazz, and modern).
· Develop class schedules and oversee seasonal sessions for youth and adult age groups.
· Develop and implement a comprehensive summer dance camp curriculum.
· Ensure classes are inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive.
· Plan and direct recitals and informal performances throughout the year.
· Develop and implement a comprehensive training program for competitive dancers ages 5–18, focused on technique, versatility, and performance.
· Lead auditions, determine team placements, and set expectations for commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
· Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and supportive team culture that balances high standards with personal growth.
· Provide mentorship to dancers, fostering their technical, artistic, personal, and spiritual growth
· Foster partnership and community with dance students’ families through effective communication.
Instruction & Choreography
· Teach classes for both youth and adults, as needed.
· Choreograph and direct performances, showcases, and community events.
· Plan and direct recitals and informal performances throughout the year.
· Choreograph award-winning routines across multiple styles (e.g., jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, tap) for annual competitions and recitals.
· Instruct weekly team classes, technique intensives, and solo/duet/trio coaching sessions.
· Oversee rehearsal schedules and monitor individual dancer progress.
Competition Management
· Select competition schedule and register teams for local, regional, and national events.
· Coordinate all aspects of competition weekends (costumes, travel, parent communications).
· Attend all major competitions and serve as the primary team representative.
Staff Management
· Hire, train, and supervise part-time instructors.
· Provide leadership, mentorship, and ongoing professional development to staff.
· Conduct performance evaluations and facilitate team meetings.
· Observe classes and provide coaching to ensure consistency and excellence.
· Supervise and support instructors in choreographing student pieces.
Administration & Operations
· Oversee dance program registration, attendance tracking, and class evaluations.
· Manage program budgets, supplies, studio space, and maintenance needs.
· Work closely with the Marketing Department on all dance collateral including posters, emails, program guide and website content, newsletters, and playbills.
· Ensure child safety and compliance with all center policies, including background checks and emergency procedures.
· Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding schedules, expectations, and team updates.
· Manage budgets related to competition entry fees, costumes, and travel.
· Represent the program at community events and recitals to build program visibility and reputation.
· Build relationships with community partners, schools, and local artists.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Dance, Performing Arts, Education, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
· Minimum 5 years of experience teaching dance to youth and/or adults, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or program leadership role.
· Experience in community-based or nonprofit settings.
· Experience in performance production and stage management.
· Experience leading dancers to successful placements at regional and national competitions.
· Experience in daily administrative tasks (payroll, budget oversight) and working closely with marketing and registration teams.
· Experience in costume selection/design and music editing.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 360.
· CPR/First Aid certified (or willingness to obtain).
· Must pass a background check.
Work Schedule: flexible schedule required, including evenings and weekends for classes, rehearsals, and events.
