DESCRIPTION


Under the supervision of the Circulation Supervisor, the Library Assistant performs a wide variety of library services to include clerical, customer-service-related, technical and paraprofessional library work in support of various sections of the library, and library programming. Provides general information and assistance to library patrons.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


  • Perform a variety of administrative functions requiring considerable discretion and specialized knowledge; conduct audits, interpret contracts, documents, vendor invoices, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide high level of customer service to neighbors, subordinates, associates, and supervisors.
  • Respond to requests for library materials, services and information. Assist patrons in completing requests for materials not available in the local collection.
  • Provide basic reference services, using printed materials, automated databases and other library technologies.
  • Assist patrons in the use of library equipment, including computers, print management, Maker Space equipment and PC reservation systems.
  • Instruct patrons in basic Internet usage, self-check stations, and other automated services.
  • Perform a variety of paraprofessional duties, which include creating a variety of documents, entering information into a computer and maintaining files and records.
  • Operate a variety of office and/or audiovisual equipment including a computer, telephone system, copy machine, facsimile machine, projectors and other related- equipment.
  • Assist preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits. Support seasonal and on-going programs and activities, including adult and children's programs.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints regarding circulation services and patron problems concerning the operation of the automated library system.
  • Create and maintain patron data files. Assist in registration of new patrons and determining appropriate patron category and residence eligibility.
  • Interpret, apply and explain library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Order and catalog books, periodicals and other printed materials. Work with vendors to resolve materials or invoice problems.
  • Prepare purchase orders, check requests, requisitions for the purchase of office supplies, maintain inventories, posts and balances expenses and accurately maintain ledgers and logs as required.
  • Perform general circulation duties.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensure all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations.
  • Assist with development, improvement and implementation of policies, procedures, workflows, and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Act as a liaison with other City departments.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS


Bachelors' degree and no prior experience.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background and MVR check.
Must possess a valid class "C" Driver's License.
Must be able to work a combination of morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts.
Preference given to applicants that are proficient in written and verbal Spanish.

SOFTWARE SKILLS REQUIRED
Intermediate: 10-Key, Word Processing/Typing
Basic: Accounting, Presentation/PowerPoint, Spreadsheet
